Lack of normalcy

About

We don’t believe in normal.

Normal changes depending on where you grow up.

Who raised you.

Who loves you.

What language you speak.

What you have survived.

What brings you joy.

Instead of chasing normal, I choose curiosity.

Instead of perfection, exploration.

Instead of trends, thoughtful design.

Every piece begins with a question.

Every collection becomes an invitation to see the world in a new light.

Why lack of normalcy?

Normal has never existed.

Every person has a different story.

Every community creates its own traditions.

Every family defines success differently.

Lack of Normalcy exists to celebrate the beauty found in those differences.

This work is interested in the experiences that shape us, the ways we connect, and the objects that help us feel seen.

THE GENERATOR BEHIND LACK OF NORMALCY

I’m Napier Kentish — a Houston-born, Atlanta-based designer, artist, and generator of ideas, objects, and connection.

My work begins with observation—of my own human experience, the experiences of those around me, and the stories, cultures, and the impacts of negative politics and social conditions that shape how we move through the world.

Professionally, I help organizations solve complex problems through human-centered design and systems thinking.

Lack of Normalcy is my creative practice.

It gives me space to explore those same questions through painting, sewing, photography, writing, and thoughtfully designed objects.

This practice is rooted in my own human experience while making space to learn from, connect with, and reflect on the experiences of others.

I believe the human experience can always be improved, no matter the medium.

Sometimes that happens through better systems.

Sometimes it happens through a garment, an image, a conversation, or an object that makes someone feel recognized.

Everything begins with curiosity.

Everything ends with a conversation.

Napier holds a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations, Minor in Graphic Design from Howard University (2017) and a Master of Professional Studies in UX Design from the Maryland Institute College of Art (2021).
